Propagating irreversibility fronts in cyclically sheared suspensions

چکیده
The interface separating a liquid from its vapor phase is diffuse; the composition varies continuously one to other over finite length. Recent experiments on dynamic jamming fronts in two dimensions [Waitukaitis et al., Europhys. Lett. 102, 44001 (2013)] identified diffuse between jammed and unjammed disks. In both cases, thickness of diverges as critical transition approached. We investigate generality this behavior using third system: A model cyclically sheared non-Brownian suspensions. As we sediment particles toward boundary, observe traveling front that marks irreversible reversible phases. argue width linked diverging correlation length scale bulk, which probe by studying avalanches near criticality. Our results show how interfaces may arise generally when an incompressible brought point.

Irreversibility and chaos: role of lubrication interactions in sheared suspensions.
We investigate non-Brownian particles suspended in a periodic shear-flow using simulations. Following Metzger and Butler [Phys. Rev. E 82, 051406 (2010)], we show that the chaotic dynamics arising from lubrication interactions are too weak to generate an observable particle dispersion. The irreversibility observed in periodic flow is dominated by contact interactions. Nonetheless, we show that ...
متن کاملSelf-diffusion in sheared suspensions
Self-diffusion in a suspension of spherical particles in steady linear shear flow is investigated by following the time evolution of the correlation of number density fluctuations. Expressions are presented for the evaluation of the self-diffusivity in a suspension which is either macroscopically quiescent or in linear flow at arbitrary Peclet number Pe = j a 2 / 2 D , where j i s the shear rat...
متن کاملBiscale chaos in propagating fronts.
The propagating chemical fronts found in cubic autocatalytic reactiondiffusion processes are studied. Simulations of the reaction-diffusion equation near to and far from the onset of the front instability are performed and the structure and dynamics of chemical fronts are studied. Qualitatively different front dynamics are observed in these two regimes. Close to onset the front dynamics can be ...
متن کاملPropagating fronts on sandpile surfaces
– The flow of granular matter such as sand is often characterized by the motion of a thin superficial layer near the free surface, while the bulk of the solid remains immobile. A pair of equations called the BCRE equations (Bouchaud J-P., Cates M. E., Ravi Prakash J. and Edwards S. F. J. Phys. 4 (1994) 1383) have been proposed to model these flows and account for the dynamic exchange of mass be...
متن کاملNumerical Methods for Propagating Fronts
In many physical problems, a key aspect is the motion of a propagating front separating two components. As fundamental as this may be, the development of a numerical algorithm to accurately track the moving front is difficult. In this report, we describe some previous theoretical and numerical work. We begin with two examples to motivate the problem, followed by some analytical results. These t...
